Established by FDR on 23 June 1943, and charged with promoting the preservation of cultural properties in war areas, provided this mission did not interfere with military operations.

The Commission provided lists and reports on cultural treasures to military units, and proposed the establishment of the MFAA. The work of the ACLS and the Harvard group contributed greatly to the establishment of the Roberts Commission and provided the Commission with valuable prepared technical information.

Our research on each of the Monuments Men and women is now in its fifth year. For those names in bold, we have completed biographies, and in most instances have a photograph. However, our research continues on each of the other names for which we have varying degrees of information. In some instances, we have just a name. We appeal to the public for help in completing these biographies. Anyone with information, including photographs, should contact ehudson@monumentsmen.com.
